Solutions for a

sustainable campus

About the project

Limited car parking areas on campus has been a pressing issue for years now and it has been exceptionally increasing since the implementation of car stickers for students and staff. This means that students and staff are needed to park their cars accordingly to the colors of their stickers and not randomly as they like.  The increase in number of students driving to the university has caused major congestions along the campus route especially during peak hours such as morning class at 9am and in the evening when class ends at 5pm. Because of this issue, there are a number of students who resort to cycling to cycling to campus as a medium of convenience. This is supported by interviews and observations. This is definitely encouraging and a good step in the right direction as it reduces the amount of cars on campus, thus could accommodate to the limited parking spaces issue. Not to mention, the positive environmental impact towards the environment. However, there is a lack of designated parking spaces for bicycles. The students who cycle to campus merely chain their bicycles on corridor railings or leave them at open areas. Some students who own a bicycle do not feel comfortable to cycle to campus because of the lack of bicycle infrastructure, as they fear of the safety of their bicycles. Currently, there is only one designated parking area located at the Sports Complex, which is a 15 minutes walk from the main campus buildings. This is rather inconvenient. Therefore, there is a need to install more bicycle racks, especially at main campus buildings.
